From SCOTT CRATTY
Friends of the Farmers Market,
Your local farmers need you more than ever this Saturday at the Ukiah Farmers’ Market.
It is once again time for the Fabulous Flashback Car Show — a fine, long-standing Ukiah event, for which the farmers’ market relocates one block onto Clay Street (between School and Oak). Unfortunately, over the last few years Car Show weekend has resulted in a very low turn out for the farmers’ market. That is sad because, much as they might like to just take the week off and as earnestly as they might request, they cannot ask those tomato plants & peach trees to take the week off with them. All our great local produce still needs to find a home, car show or no.
Car Show weekend does have some plusses. Starting with the obvious, you can see some cool old cars. Also, because Clay Street is not as wide as our usual venue, the market will have a cozier feel. Also the vendors will be significantly rearranged, so you are likely to discover something you may have been overlooking.
This Saturday will also features a rare appearance of local, free range chicken at the Mendocino Organics booth. Aqua-Rodeo Oysters will also be in the house, which will be increasingly rare as the season changes (he will be with us at most every other week). Also, Afterglow Naturals body care products will be at the market.
If you are one of our patrons who shies away from the car show, please consider coming early (the selection is best then anyhow). The market will be open from 8:30 to noon. Parking will be available directly across the street in the Ukiah City Hall lot. In case it is drizzling & you need more motivation, here is an article about the challenges we will all need to meet to create a healthier, more viable food system: Do You Have The Balls To Really Change The Food System?
Hope to see you all there … and bring a friend.
