The Safe Seed Pledge
“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms poses great biological risks, as well as economic, political and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”

Benefits of FFSC Seeds
Our seed is defined by a few key traits: Organic, open pollinated and public domain.
Organically Grown
Our farms are Certified Organic, adhering to USDA regulations for the production of organic seed. Continued research demonstrates what we organic farmers have known for eons—organic systems confer multiple benefits while non-organic, chemically based approaches yield harm. Our mission is to grow a sustainable, organic agriculture, starting with the seed, where it all begins. We nurture our crops by building rich, healthy soil and encouraging all beneficial organisms such as bacteria, insects, and birds to keep pests in check. We don’t use genetic modification, irradiation, sewage sludge or synthetic agrochemicals— toxic, petroleum intensive methods that are allowed in non-organic system, and that wreak havoc on people, planet and our economy. Organic farming protects and enhances crop quality, biodiversity, air, water, soil and public health, cultivating a better today and tomorrow.
Open Pollinated
Our seed is open pollinated (OP), which means that saved seed will breed true and that farmers have direct access and control of their seed supply. In contrast, F-1 hybrids and GMO varieties are impossible for farmers to reproduce, leaving them dependent on seed companies for new seed. OP varieties are reproduced through natural pollination via wind or insects, and are maintained provided that there is no cross pollination from other varieties of the same species. If particular plant traits are desired, humans may use natural mechanisms such as hand-pollination or removing undesirable plants from the population before pollination begins. This traditional, open-pollinated breeding approach allows for continuous adaptation of a variety across diverse and changing climatic conditions, and represents dynamic evolution in action. Open pollinated varieties that are well selected can out-perform F-1 hybrids in terms of efficient use of natural resources, hardiness, disease and pest resistance, flavor characteristics and other important traits, making them appealing for growers and consumers alike.
Public Domain
We’re out to save organic seed and we want you to do it, too. For these reasons, all of our seed is held in the public domain (PD). That means there are no restrictions for saving, multiplying, sharing or selling seeds you produce from our seeds. Seed industry consolidation has put a handful of large companies in control of much of the world’s seed supply. These companies focus exclusively on developing varieties that are F-1 hybrids, elite OP varieties with utility patents, or GMOs. This prohibits seed saving, the time honored practice that allows growers to adapt seed to their growing conditions and select the best performers for reproduction. Denying seed sovereignty and centralizing seed supplies that are the basis for our food supply both threaten food security. To answer this problem, we’re putting all of our seed in the public domain for customers to reproduce and improve, creating a worldwide, bio-regionally adapted, publicly held and genetically resilient organic seed bank.
