To be truly radical is to make hope possible, rather than despair convincing.” ~ Raymond Williams
Small is beautiful, when small is skilled and dedicated... There is so much artificial and plastic crap around, the human spirit yearns for the homespun and the real. ~Gene Logsdon→
I've observed that people tend to live at one of two extremes in the spectrum of life: those who live on the edge, and those who avoid the edge. Those who live on the edge are hanging out in the most dangerous and unstable places — yet they're also often the most powerful agents of change, because the edge is where change is happening; away from the edge, things are naturally unchanging. ~Thom Hartmann
THE SMALL ORGANIC FARM greatly discomforts the corporate/ industrial mind because the small organic farm is one of the most relentlessly subversive forces on the planet. Over centuries both the communist and the capitalist systems have tried to destroy small farms because small farmers are a threat to the consolidation of absolute power.
Thomas Jefferson said he didn’t think we could have democracy unless at least 20% of the population was self-supporting on small farms so they were independent enough to be able to tell an oppressive government to stuff it.
It is very difficult to control people who can create products without purchasing inputs from the system, who can market their products directly thus avoiding the involvement of mercenary middlemen, who can butcher animals and preserve foods without reliance on industrial conglomerates, and who can’t be bullied because they can feed their own faces. ~Eliot Coleman
I sang as one / Who on a tilting deck sings / To keep men's courage up, though the wave hangs / That shall cut off their sun. ~C. Day Lewis
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit. ~Thomas Paine
PUBLIC DEFENDER LINDA THOMPSON did not attend memorial services for long time public defenders Bert Schlosser and Tom Croak. Zero persons from Thompson’s classy operation attended Croak’s service, three deputy district attorneys turned out for Schlosser. The boss did not acknowledge either memorial nor did she send flowers or condolences to family members of […]
It was an exciting night that crisp February 25th of this year, so exciting that Walter K. Miller’s performance is playing again in Mendocino County Superior Court. Miller, 43, of Ukiah, is accused of leaning out the passenger window of a speeding car and shooting at a pursuing deputy’s vehicle. Miller was one of two […]
Greetings one and all. If you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin. Is it cold enough for you? I thought so. As is often the case when the first such significant cold spell hits the Valley, it is the main talking point around town. This is understandable of course, but obviously we have nowhere […]
Before she was a victim of homicide, Susan Keegan was a victim of emotional abuse. When we think about domestic violence, we tend to think about physical harm, but a victim can also be the target of verbal aggression, manipulative behavior, and deliberate efforts to humiliate or belittle. Contempt is often part of that package, with the abuser mocking or ins […]
What would our food system look like if the impacts of production on the environment and on public health were taken into account? At present the polluter doesn’t pay, and those producing food sustainably are not rewarded for positive outcomes.
From Britain to the Czech Republic, European nations have been restoring rivers to their natural state — taking down dams, removing levees, and reviving floodplains. For a continent that long viewed rivers as little more than shipping canals and sewers, it is a striking change.

In a plea made directly to the thousands of civil servants whose daily occupation feeds the ever-growing spy state, a group of former whistleblowers published an open letter Wednesday in the Guardian urging those individuals to join Edward Snowden and the other brave truth-tellers "to follow your conscience and let us know what's being done in our […]
While all the details have yet to be released, it seems clear that the budget agreement announced by Senator Patty Murray and Representative Paul Ryan, which sets discretionary budget authority limits for fiscal years 2014 and 2015, will do essentially nothing to alter the disastrous trajectory that has characterized fiscal policy since 2011. I support reach […]

"If religion means anything other than Christianity, we have no way to stop Islam or satanism," is the title of this video. At 2:30, the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer, discussing the First Amendment, concludes that "By 'religion,' the founders were thinking of Christianity. Just before the final presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney last year, American Atheists paid for this ad to be driven around Boca Raton, Florida, where the debate was being held: The ad referenced two doctrines of the Mormon faith -- one, that black people were forbidden from entering the priesthood until 1978, and second, that sexuall […]
Time magazine announced this morning that its Person of the Year was Pope Francis: But what makes this Pope so important is the speed with which he has captured the imaginations of millions who had given up on hoping for the church at all. People weary of the endless parsing of sexual ethics, the buck-passing infighting over lines of authority when all the w […]
